Doug Saunders is European Bureau Chief for the Toronto Globe and Mail and contributes a weekly column on global social and political trends. His second and current book, "The Myth of the Muslim Tide: Do Immigrants Threaten the West?", details both the popular myths of the "Islamic threat" to the West after 9/11 and the actual realities of Muslim immigration, integration, and public perception.

Author Doug Saunders joins a panel discussion of his latest book, "The Myth of the Muslim Tide: Do Immigrants Threaten the West?", which explores the impact of increased (Islamic) immigration to North America and Europe and the popular debate surrounding the perceived degradation of Western values and society since 9/11. "Muslim Tide" is a follow-up to his first book, "Arrival City," which discusses similar themes. Saunders, who is based in London, contributes a weekly column to the Toronto Globe and Mail and serves as the newspaper's European bureau chief.

Palestinian Anti-Occupation Activist Visits Cleveland

Iyad Burnat, leader of a West Bank Popular Non-violent Resistance Movement, to visit Cleveland State University

Iyad Burnat, a leader of a Palestinian village's popular non-violent protest movement (the Bil'in Popular Committee) against Israeli occupation and illegal land claims and settlement, will visit CSU to "tell the stories of Bil'in and life under the Israeli Occupation of the West Bank, accompanied by photos and video". Burnat's life and leadership and the Popular Committee's non-violent campaign against Israel's West Bank Separation Wall and illegal land occupation are documented in the award-winning film "5 Broken Cameras," produced by Emad Burnat (Iyad's brother) and Israeli director Guy Davidi.

This special lunch forum, hosted by The City Club of Cleveland, the citadel of free speech, will be Dr. Naif al-Mutawa's first event in Cleveland. Dr. Mutawa, a psychologist by training, is the creator of the celebrated comic series THE 99, "the first group of comic superheroes born of an Islamic archetype."

Dr. Naif al-Mutawa is Founder and CEO of Teshkeel Media Group, for whom he created THE 99 (described above). THE 99 has received positive attention from the world's media and has been commended by, among others, President Barack Obama. Al-Mutawa has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, a Master's in Organizational Psychology from Columbua University, and an MBA, also from Columbia.

"Transit Cities" Screening and Panel Discussion at the Cleveland Film Festival

NOCMES is proud to partner with the Cleveland International Film Festival and sponsor the screening of the film "Transit Cities." The film, directed by Mohammad Al-Hushki and shot in Jordan, tells the story of a Westernized Jordanian woman who returns home after 17 years abroad to a country and family she no longer recognizes. "House of Stones" Community Book Discussion

NOCMES and the Cuyahoga County Public Library will be hosting a community discussion of Mr. Shadid's just-published book, House of Stones. Facilitating the discussion is Case Western Reserve University Associate Professor of Political Science and NOCMES affiliated faculty member Pete Moore and The Civic Commons's Curator of Conversation, Dan Moulthrop.

Charting the Arab and Muslim Experience

Prof. Jamal's scholarly work has largely dealt with analyzing and understanding the Arab-American and Muslim-American experience. NOCMES hopes to encourage a discussion that bridges Prof. Jamal's broader perspective with that of the local community. This is in keeping with one of NOCMES's core goals: the exploration of the diversity of the Arab and Muslim world. By turning the lens on ourselves, we hope to encourage this exploration and discovery.

City Club Friday Forum: "The Future of the Arab World: Pro-American Democracy or No Democracy at All?"
